Paver Sealing on Sanibel Island, FL

Sanibel is beautiful on pavers and hard on them too. Salt air, beach sand tracked up from the shore, shady tropical landscaping and long stretches when the house sits empty all wear down a driveway, pool deck or entry walk. I'm Aaron Kochheiser. Paver Savers & Concrete, LLC has been cleaning and sealing pavers in Southwest Florida since 2010, and we're based in Fort Myers, just across the causeway.

What island conditions do to Sanibel pavers

  • Salt air and spray. Salt settles on the surface and works into the joints. Over time it dulls color and breaks down unprotected joint sand.
  • Beach sand and shell. Sand blown or tracked onto pavers acts like sandpaper underfoot and fills joints with loose grit instead of locked sand.
  • Shade and humidity. Sea grape, palms and dense landscaping keep parts of a driveway or lanai damp, and that's where black mold, algae and mildew take hold.
  • Storm recovery. After Hurricane Ian, many Sanibel properties had paving that was flooded, patched or relaid. New and old sections often look mismatched until the whole surface is cleaned and sealed together.
  • Seasonal and rental homes. When nobody's there for months, growth and staining build up unnoticed. Many owners want the surface handled before they or their guests arrive.

How we clean and seal on Sanibel

Sealing only works on a clean, sound surface, so preparation comes first. We deep clean to lift salt film, mold, algae and staining, then re-sand the joints with polymeric sand so they lock together and resist washout, weeds and ants.

We only use the highest quality two-part water-based urethane sealers. You can walk on freshly sealed pavers after one hour, and vehicles can go back on the driveway the next day, which helps when you're coordinating a short stay or a rental turnover.

If the pavers have an old coating that's turned white, cloudy or is peeling, sealing over it won't fix it. We visually inspect the existing sealer and, if it has failed, recommend paver stripping first. If the surface has faded badly or has sunken areas, a full paver restoration, including recoloring and heavy weed removal, may be the better plan.

Travertine pool decks are common on the island and need their own approach. See travertine and stone maintenance.

Keeping island pavers protected

Salt air doesn't take a year off, so a schedule matters more here than inland. We recommend resealing every 2 to 3 years. If you'd rather not track it, our annual maintenance plan keeps your pavers freshly cleaned and sealed every year.

How a Sanibel sealing job works

  1. Send photos and access details. Show us the whole surface and the problem spots. Tell us whether the home is seasonal or a rental, and who can let us in.

  2. We look at the surface. We check the pavers, joints, any existing sealer and where water and sand collect.

  3. Clean and re-sand. Deep cleaning, then fresh polymeric sand in the joints.

  4. Seal. A two-part water-based urethane sealer, applied once the pavers are dry. Walk on it after one hour; drive on it the next day.

  5. Stay on schedule. Reseal every 2 to 3 years, or join the annual maintenance plan.

What sealer do you use on Sanibel pavers?

We only use the highest quality two-part water-based urethane sealers.

How soon can we use the driveway after sealing?

You can walk on freshly sealed pavers after one hour, and vehicles can go back on the driveway the next day.

How much does paver sealing cost on Sanibel?

Most paver sealing jobs fall between $1.10 and $1.50 per square foot, and we keep some of the most competitive paver sealing prices in the industry. Every job gets a free quote based on your actual surface.

Can you seal while we're away or between rental guests?

Yes. Send photos and access instructions, and tell us when the property needs to be ready. We'll plan the job around that date.
